Chapter Twenty-One: Brazil’s Future
But before venturing to Latin America, our hosts examined the progress made in Florida since Chapter Twenty.
In recent weeks, West Flagler has submitted a request for reconsideration. The court did not dismiss the request, but instead asked the Seminoles to respond by August 31st.
Due to the excessive bureaucracy, it is widely believed that sports wagering in Florida won’t be available soon. However, it’s not impossible for sports betting to launch during the upcoming NFL season.
**What’s in store for Brazil?**
Meanwhile, in Brazil, Neil Montgomery stated that “anything is conceivable.”
The nation regulated sports wagering in July, with President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva signing a temporary measure.
This officially implemented the sports betting regulations approved by Law No. 13,756 of 2018. But Montgomery noted that there were some “surprises” in the regulations, including a higher GGR tax, stricter marketing limitations, and higher licensing fees.
Although these rules mark a kind of conclusion, not everyone is content with the result. There’s now optimism that they can be modified in the Brazilian National Congress, where they require approval to become permanent.
“We still encounter strong opposition from specific segments of society, from certain sectors of Congress,” Montgomery stated.
“A great deal is happening in Brazil, but we need to observe what actually transpires.”
Montgomery mentioned that despite any political tension surrounding sports wagering in Brazil, advancement is being made in implementing the regulations.
“Simultaneously with the debate regarding federal legislation, some states and municipalities have taken the initiative in this process and implemented their own products locally.”
“From my point of view… I believe this is a significant step forward for Brazil,” he said. “The temporary measure is a very, very positive development. It’s the initial step.”
For Hugo Bown-Gattner, the first returning visitor of the World Politics series, the regulation of sports betting is a significant step forward for the nation.
Advancement has been achieved.
