**Chapter 23: G2E, Internet Wagering, and Additional Reflections**
In chapter 23 of the Political World series, everyone is back, discussing internet wagering, levies, and Florida.
**2024: The Year of Internet Wagering in the US?**
One of the most talked-about subjects at the event was internet wagering, which made its presence known at G2E 2023.
Brendan acknowledges that there’s a push for internet wagering in the US in 2024, but it’s not straightforward in the political landscape. He believes it’s a matter of when, not if, legalization will occur.
Brandt says the industry is working to educate policymakers, but he thinks state finances will be the biggest factor. Federal COVID-19 funds are drying up, so states are looking for new revenue streams – could internet wagering be the solution?
Michigan demonstrates the potential benefits. The state has collected $1 billion in taxes from expanding gambling. Internet wagering revenue is 2,700% higher than sports betting revenue, so it contributes most of the tax income.
Brendan adds that the risk is that policymakers will view internet wagering as a cash cow and impose high taxes.
When state authorities increase levies, enterprises tend to steer clear of the marketplace, diminishing potential income – just consider Ohio.
The Florida sports wagering narrative has taken an unexpected turn. The highest court’s temporary restraining order prevented the revival of mobile betting, but now that the highest court has declined to take on the case, the temporary restraining order has been lifted.
However, this doesn’t necessarily indicate a triumph for Hard Rock and the Seminole Tribe. The case is still pending before the state’s highest court, so there’s still a chance of things getting stuck and compelling a complete reassessment.
