In anticipation of the Melbourne Cup, employees at Crown Casino are considering a walkout.
The proposed industrial action, scheduled to commence on Victoria Derby Day, would extend through Saturday and conclude on Monday, the day preceding the Melbourne Cup.
Staff are requesting a revised enterprise bargaining agreement that encompasses equitable yearly salary adjustments, enhanced remuneration for weekends and statutory holidays, more balanced rostering to promote work-life harmony, and salary advancement contingent on tenure.
Veteran personnel, including Debbie Lipscombe, assert that escalating living expenses make wage hikes and ameliorated working circumstances imperative. They have articulated concerns about their economic well-being, referencing the growing burdens of household expenditures, commuting, and vehicle storage.
The labor organization representing the workforce, United Voice, states that the ballot empowers all members to engage in the strike, potentially affecting 3,600 personnel. Initially, Crown contested these figures, claiming only 1,700 workers were qualified. Following further elucidation, Crown adjusted the number of eligible employees to roughly 3,100.
Four-hour work stoppages are anticipated to occur between 6pm and 10pm on Saturday, 10am and 2pm on Sunday, and 6pm and 10pm on Monday.
Despite ongoing discussions, the parties involved remain in disagreement regarding the number of staff permitted to partake in the strike action.
