The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) has applauded the recommendation by the R.M. Lodha Commission to decriminalize wagering on sports in India. A supporter of legalization since 2012, the CII contends that it would generate substantial income that could be utilized to enhance athletic facilities and stimulate travel. They highlight the achievements of other nations that employ gaming revenue to finance worthwhile initiatives and foster sports growth. Nevertheless, the CII also maintains that any law should be thoughtfully evaluated and deliberated with stakeholders within the athletic realm.
The Lodha Commission, entrusted with proposing improvements in Indian cricket, posits that decriminalization will assist in curbing the dishonesty that has tainted the sport. This proposal follows a 2015 controversy that saw two leading cricket clubs, the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, barred due to their proprietors’ participation in unlawful gambling.
