The government of the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is creating a new advisory board to tackle the negative impacts of gambling within social clubs. This board will comprise members from both social clubs and groups focused on reducing gambling harm, ensuring a comprehensive strategy.
ACT’s Minister for Gaming, Shane Rattenbury, will head the board, highlighting the government’s dedication to addressing this concern. The board’s main objective will be to enact measures outlined in a prior agreement between the government and Parliament. These actions include a decrease in the overall number of poker machine permits, the implementation of both wagering restrictions and loading limits on these devices, and strengthening self-banning initiatives.
The government acknowledges the vital role social clubs play in the community structure of Canberra. Their aim is to guarantee these clubs can remain thriving community centers while also lessening the detrimental effects linked to gambling.
He stressed that every organization possesses a distinct membership base and objective, necessitating support tactics customized to those particular requirements. A committee, comprising club presidents, a labor representative, and the gaming commission director, will convene for its inaugural session on May 26th.
